BACKGROUND :

The first demonstration of the clinical use of ORT (Oral Rehydration Therapy) for the treatment of cholera was first reported 50 years ago. Since then millions of lives have been saved as the use of ORT has been expanded to virtually all causes of diarrhea. Additionally its use has been expanded to other cases of dehydration. Lessons from its development and use could be expanded to low-cost, effective treatment of some NCDs.

OBJECTIVES :

To review the multifactorial elements that led to the development and dissemination of ORT (Oral Rehydration Therapy) and to demonstrate how this experience might be a framework for successful programs to control NCDs
